"Mom, we have 31 chickens now!"

by Embrace Country Life on 04/24/12

This post is written by Julia (age 9):

After we finished feeding the horses, I heard a noise from the chickens' stall so  I told my dad and he said they were just playing. But then we checked the stall and the chickens were huddled in a corner.   So my dad walked in to see what was the matter and he said a chicken died. Then he got a shovel and said, "You can go inside and I'll take care of the chicken."  Then when I got inside, that's when I told my mom, "We have 31 chickens now." Alicia didn't do barn chores because her hair was wet from the shower.  She asked so many questions about the chicken and it got annoying.  Then, I went in the living room and opened the window and asked my dad if the chicken was really dead.  He said, "Yes."  Then I asked, "What did you do with it?" and he said, "Buried it."  I said, "That fast?"  He said, "Yes."  The end!

Yes, one of our chickens joined the many generations that went before her in the great chicken coop in the sky.  And I'm sure if there was a contest to see who could bury an animal the fastest, my money would be on Cliff.  He has buried more animals over the last 15 years than I can remember.  He has dug big holes and small holes in the middle of the summer, the early winter, and many in the spring.  Our girls have become somewhat resilient to death seeing the circle of life on the farm.  They have hatched eggs from an incubator and witnessed the deadly fall of one of their horses.  The joy and sadness.  Another day in the country.

I am sad for you that your chicken died. I, personally, hate chickens, having been pecked to a "nub" (like my good friend, Junie B. Jones, would say) by more than one! They are a mean (and tasty) bunch of animals. So, after re-reading what I have written, I guess I am sorry you didn't get a chance to EAT that chicken with some gravy and biscuits. That's what country living is really all about... knowing EVERYTHING about your food!

This is a very well written story by young Julia! I also hope she writes more and look forward to reading her blogs. I too love chicken and biscuits! It may sound odd but death is a part of life, especially on a farm.

Hi Julia, Awesome job on the blog and I think it's wonderful that you and your sisters are so close with your father. Enjoy every minute of it, you are all very blessed. Sorry to hear about your chicken! I myself have always wanted to incubate eggs with my son, but haven't done it yet! He is 17 now, and I know it's not too late, but I was never sure what to do with the chickens once they hatch! This is the first blog I have read and I will make it a habit to continue reading! Looking forward to hearing more of your adventures.

Nice job, Julia! I could "hear" your voice in your blog! Unfortunately the circle of life does come around to death, but you know you give your animals the best lives ever on the farm! That chicken died a happy chicken... I guarantee that! Keep writing! I'll keep reading! xxoo

Best post yet - Julia, YOU CAN TELL A STORY. The teacher in me can't help but notice your quality use of dialogue, but more than that, you told us a story we wanted to hear. Debbie, I can see where she gets it! Your final paragraph captured so much. Keep writing!
